i'm liking what this book has the potential to be but the execution is not looking promising :/

i absolutely love reading about high altitude mountaineering. i have zero interest in ever partaking in such a dangerous hobby but i find those that seek it out so fascinating. they could not be more different from me if they tried. to me, it's something ridiculously reckless. to them, it's a calling. i knew the events of this book before going into it and if you've spent more than 5 minutes reading about everest then you'll have at least heard of this disaster too. at the time it was the most lethal day in the history of the mountain and 30 years on it still holds the 3rd spot on that unfortunate list. i thought knowing what happened would save me from feeling the devastation but it didn't. reading the facts and taking in the details and emotions of those who witnessed the calamity themselves are two very different things. this book (and all others on the topic) have their critics. there's not one agreed upon version of events and even more controversially there's not one agreed upon cause of them. but i personally thought this book was as fair and balanced as possible. i didn't feel like an agenda was being pushed or anyone was being villainised. jon owns up to his errors and even questions if his presence had an impact on the events of the day. narratives of this nature will always be biased because we're only ever in our own shoes and can only ever remember our own memories. we're only human and so is this book. i'm curious to read the works of other survivors to see if that opinion changes but as of right now i have no reason to discredit jon krakauer's attempt at reconstructing such an awful day at the top of the world.
