I will start by admitting I read this book purely because of the film adaptation that is being released in October. That is not only what encouraged me to start but also what motivated me to finish this book, because I love Jessica Chastain.
With that out of the way, this book was genuinely one of the most pointless horror books I have ever read. The Other Mommy – the supposed monster of the book – is mediocre at best and laughable at worst. The parents are both abysmal in slightly different ways, but they both share the qualities of poor decision making and a total lack of thinking before doing. Bela is supposed to be eight but makes decisions and talks as though she’s maybe 5 years old which, as she’s the narrator of the book, makes the story infuriatingly unbelievable. I usually have no problem with child narrators, if they’re done right, but Bela was one of the worst narrators (child or not) that I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing the perspective of. This book was a one star read until the very ending, which I will admit I liked. The ending was, in my opinion, the most horrifying aspect of the book – aside, of course, from the terrible parents. I know a lot of people disliked the ending, but it was the only thing that actually worked for me.
All in all, not a great read to say the least. I will still be watching the film adaptation though because I have hope that it will work better as a film, or at least that I’ll enjoy Jessica Chastain’s performance.

I started reading this book about a week ago and the first things I noticed were the prose style and child pov. I read about five chapters and realized that the experience of this book needed to be read aloud, so I previewed the audiobook and fell in love with the narrator!! Creepy kid voice that sort of wavers? C’est parfait! (It’s perfect!)
I would highly recommend everyone to employ the audiobook read by Delaine Nicole Gill (even if you read alongside her voice).

Interesting and insightful but lacked some depth at points. This definitely gives the reader something to think about and I admire the author’s bravery but I think this could have been developed better than it was. This is also partly why I can’t really give a long, careful review like I normally do.
