This is a genre-defining, enduring classic for a reason. I thank Andy Serkis for an incredible audiobook performance that helped me through some of the more "historical" portions. I've watched the films and liked them, but reading through this first part of the story is the first time I think I've truly followed what was happening. The writing is beautiful and the characters are the blueprint for fantasy as we know it today.
Now I just need my hold for the next book to be available from the library!

I’m aware this is a YA book published over 20 years ago, but the fat-phobia was rampant and was really hard to get past. The characters didn’t grow in any meaningful way and the “love story” which I’ll admit wasn’t central to the story, was between a fifteen year old girl and an 18 year old boy. Sitting for a portrait and having half a serious conversation does not a relationship make. I remember really loving Sarah Dessen books back in the day, even if they were melodramatic and formulaic, but this one in particular was not it.
