Okay, I’m glad we’re addressing Ilya’s emotional dependence on this relationship. It also makes sense that he doesn’t realise how unhealthy it is to focus solely on your romantic relationship and work your life around it.

i find the juxtaposition of Ilya’s longing for something more public against Shane’s “not minding pretending” simply being friends with Ilya publicly a really good way of pushing the anxieties of queerness in different spaces beyond simply accepting the truth about oneself. especially in the context of a sequel it’s an impactful step forward in their narrative arcs both individually and separately that can either be wonderfully cute or fantastically heartbreaking the further we get into the book :”(
