the mermaids are so funny “she’s a fairy? where’s her wand?” “if she’s a fairy why doesn’t she have wings?” so mean girls “if you’re from africa why are you white” coded 😂😂

“Sometimes she is very mean, sometimes she leaves me very embarrassed, but always I endure it.” OW OW OW OW OW OH MY GOD
“When she doesn’t like me, she makes it clear. I like that. Why can’t everybody be that way?” real as FUCK

I haven’t heard someone describe being a young queer person, unsure of what’s going on and turning it into hatred for the object of their affection quite so effectively 😭 also hilarious that lucy is like “ok maybe im just developing slower than the other girls and i’ll like boys soon” and then immediately starts fantasizing about susannah and also SO relatable lol

I really wanted to love this book and unfortunately I didn’t, however I still enjoyed it enough to finish it. I think my biggest issue was the way the author tries to drive the same idea into your brain over and over, the idea of the vampirism being a metaphor for sexual assault (honestly not even a metaphor lol) and it made me feel like they did not trust me as a reader enough to understand the metaphor without it being fed to me. Aside from that, I honestly liked the side characters (the Lover, the Doctor, the Queen, and even the driver whose name has escaped me) more than I did the main characters. It felt like the book wasn’t as well researched as it should have been, so there wasn’t as much depth in the setting and the characters as I feel there could have been in a story like this. I also was cringing so hard the whole time when Iris would describe Lucy, it felt very unsexy, and I didn’t feel any real chemistry between them, which is unfortunate. Also, as an author, would you not be cringing every time you wrote “Butter Chicken” and “Little Cabbage” as pet names?? 😵💫 All that aside, I was curious enough about the mysterious pyramid scheme and Iris’ mother to find out what happened, though in the end I think that also fell a little flat. I wouldn’t read this book again, but since I’m on a sapphic vampire book kick, I’m not really mad at it either
