I'm enjoying the book but I really wish the map was more detailed. Anytime someone mentions a city or region I flip to the map only to remember it's just the countries.

What a book! It initially took me a while to get into it because it's so dense that it's a bit daunting. That and it made me soooo hungry! However before I knew it, I was fully consumed by the story and the writing style. Butter does a great job exploring so many issues in modern Japan through the lens of the characters. For every thought-provoking idea there also comes a WTF moment. The charscters are so interesting and fleshed out. The story itself features less CSI and more of a Criminal Minds/Silence of the Lamb conversations. And nearly every page is a love letter to food. I kid you not I will annotate this as a cookbook. It did drag a little bit right at the end but the end to all the arcs were well worth it. Overall, Butter is like butter. Rich, delectable, and food isn't the same now that I've had it.

This book was an amazing exploration of how war impacts women and generational trauma. The author does a beautiful job weaving together the three main perspectives and building suspense for the impending tragedies. The characters' pain and trauma was so well conveyed and will sit with me for a long time. The only thing that didn't resonate with me was the ending felt a bit rushed and some of the elements felt a little out of the blue. I know they came from one version of the myth but I had to reread a little bit and look it up to fully get a grasp on what happened. Overall, I really enjoyed it!

I read through this book so incredibly fast. It truly hooked me! The concept is really thought provoking and the author does a wonderful job exploring the ways it impacts individuals, relationships, and some aspects of society. It feels like reading a Twilight Zone/Black Mirror episode in that sense. I adore large ensembles and this book really shined diving into each characters' different experiences and perspectives.

    Artifacts

    Artifacts

    Natalie Lemle

For readers of The Cloisters and Counterfeit, Natalie Lemle’s debut novel offers an insider’s view into the world of stolen artifacts and the hidden networks that link museums to organized crime, when a woman is forced to remember the summer she spent on an archaeological dig in Italy, as everyone she knew then may now be in danger. Successful trusts and estates attorney Lena Connolly is asked by a colleague to assist on a case: the Italian government claims an artifact was looted and sold to a museum illegally and is seeking repatriation. The object in question is a cup made of dichroic glass, which would have been rare even in Ancient Rome, let alone thousands of years later. Lena has done everything she can to put the study abroad summer she spent on an archaeological dig in the Italian Alps behind her. Her dreams of being an archaeologist shattered when her mentor Cyrille disappeared and her enigmatic boyfriend Giamma went dark, but with this new case, the past comes roaring back. Told in alternating timelines, Artifacts follows young Lena as she falls in love with both archaeology and Giamma on the streets of Torino while her adult self pieces together what truly happened on the dig, now a fully restored Roman villa with World Heritage status. The dichroic cup, Lena discovers, may have been taken from the very site she helped unearth. Powerful and exuberant, Natalie Lemle’s Artifacts brings readers behind the museum glass and asks questions about cultural heritage and the historical preservation of our shared sense of humanity.

I’m not sure how I feel about all the time jumps? Those that have read this, did you feel the same? Is it something you got used to? The story itself is very intriguing, I just feel like I keep getting thrown off.

    Livonia Chow Mein

    Livonia Chow Mein

    Abigail Savitch-Lew

In the vein of Happiness Falls and Family Lore, a gripping story of family history and political upheaval centered around a Chinese family-owned restaurant in Brownsville, Brooklyn and its impact on the neighborhood’s Jewish and Black residents over the course of a century. In 1978, two tenements on Livonia Avenue in Brownsville burn to the ground, killing one resident and displacing dozens of others. It remains unclear who set the buildings ablaze, but the survivors are convinced the culprit is Mr. Wong. Who exactly is Mr. Wong, and what allegedly drove him to this extraordinary act of violence, is the question that consumes this novel as it plunges into four generations of Wong family history. First is Koon Lai, an immigrant who runs a Chinese restaurant on Livonia Avenue; second, his son Richard, a man desperate for his own chance at the American Dream; and third, Jason, a poet who seeks his escape in the bohemian counterculture of the 1970s, but finds himself an unwitting participant in Brooklyn’s gentrification. In the 21st century, Jason’s daughter Sadie returns to Brownsville as a journalist, determined to unravel the mystery of what happened decades earlier on the night the buildings blazed. Joining together the present and the past is the community organizer Lina Rodriguez Armstrong, who was also displaced by that fire and who has spent the intervening years fighting for the rights of Brownsville’s residents and organizing a Livonia Avenue community land trust. A stunning debut from a new talent, Livonia Chow Mein contemplates how the American pursuit of freedom relies on a collective amnesia and challenges us to consider what it would take for us to truly live in harmony.

Reparenting the Inner Child: The New Science of Our Oldest Wounds and How to Heal Them

Reparenting the Inner Child: The New Science of Our Oldest Wounds and How to Heal Them

    Nicole LePera

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of How to Do the Work and How to Be the Love You Seek comes a groundbreaking guide to healing our childhood wounds and rediscovering our full potential As adults, we often fall into patterns that feel irrational or out of character—shutting down, lashing out, people-pleasing, or self-sabotaging. Beneath those reactions lies our inner child, a younger part of us still trying to get its needs met the only way it knows how. We all carry the imprint of our earliest years. Childhood is brief, yet its impact is lifelong. Some parts of us were met with love while other parts were met with silence, criticism, or disapproval. To survive, we learned to adapt—learning to over perform, to hide, or stay small. Most of us made it through with a mix of love and lack. And many of us still protect the parts of ourselves that once felt unsafe. While we can’t change what happened, we can change how it lives within us and impacts our lives today. Reparenting the Inner Child offers a clear, compassionate path to self-integration, combining practical exercises, somatic tools, and guided reflections to help us create the safety, love, and boundaries we've always needed. Through her holistic framework that models individual development, Dr. LePera explains how we can cultivate the emotional maturity and regulation to respond calmly instead of reacting, to embrace desire instead of shame, and to question the stories we've long believed about who we have to be. Enlightening, empowering, and clarifying, Reparenting the Inner Child is a book that will stand the test of time as a comprehensive guide for personal development and healing, and a resource that will forever change the way we understand ourselves.
