I remember when the press starting picking up this case & wondering why in the world the media was framing it entirely through the men involved. If they weren't talking about how much potential Brock Turner had, they were talking about the heroism of the men who interrupted him. Perpetually infuriating that women so rarely get to be the center of their own stories.

It’s hard to find the words to describe all the powerful emotions I’ve already felt by this point. I’m grateful to Miller for sharing her story with such vulnerability and courage. It’s incredibly insightful, especially for someone who was entirely out of the loop when it came to this case.

“The judge had given Brock something that would never be extended to me: empathy. My pain was never more valuable than his potential.”

    Fuck.

“Alcohol freed Brock of moral culpability.”

They all blamed her for being so drunk she got assaulted. And now, him being drunk saved him from a longer sentence? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? I AM SO MAD. Now you tell me! This it the world we women live in.

"In court they’ll try to make you believe you are unlike the others, you are different, an exception. You are dirtier, more stupid, more promiscuous. But it’s a trick. The assault is never personal, the blaming is."

Just like rape is never about sex it's about power, so 100% of it has to do with the rapist not the victim.

My overall feeling after finishing this book is gratitude. I'm so thankful to Chanel Miller for sharing with the world her experience. I was a college student at the time of her assault, and now ten years later I'm so glad that I'm able to hear her story from her. I can let it erase the memories I have of the coverage at the time, which centered the man who assaulted her, and made me scared to live on a college campus. Her honesty and vulnerability in her writing will stick with me for the rest of my life.

Thank you, I feel like I have so much more I could say, but I think it would mostly just be me talking about how much this book made me cry lol
