An incredibly hard read content wise for me, but I'm glad I went in blind. I enjoyed the audio book narrator however sometimes it seemed like there were some awkward rerecords or perhaps it was intentional with something with the formatting of the book that I'm missing? I enjoyed this book and liked the idea of this take on a haunted house but the ending felt extremely rushed. Ezri's response to trauma felt so raw and real that I found myself relating to the therapy sessions they had. Overall, I enjoyed the flaws and story but wished the ending was executed a little differently.

The narrator, Natalie Naudus, was amazing at bringing Cora's inner thoughts out. I'm so glad I went into this book blindly. As someone who worked during in NYC during the pandemic it really was such a surreal time. The setting and the rampant Sinophobia were perfect for a horror novel as it was truly such a dark time. Would definitely recommend.

The connected stories between a bunch of different characters with a main focus on Thurwar and Staxxx really worked for me. While I understand it may lead to a lack of desired character depth overall, i think it was in service of the overall message. I found it all so important to build out the world, various attitudes of the public and people who prop up the CAPE program and the incarcerated/links in the CAPE program who are directly harmed and killed. Everything really worked for me even through the ending and the abruptness of it just like the abruptness of how lives are ended. I appreciated being left wanting at the end and the lack of a neat resolution as it was very fitting. My head was playing "We Found Love" by Rhianna at the end through my tears. The addition of footnotes on U.S. laws and real life parallels worked really well on my Kobo where it didn't take me out of the reading and opened as a pop up.
Definitely a harder read for me. I took my time with it because it's rooted in our reality of late-stage capitalism and the neoslavery from the prison-industrial complex. All of these concepts are very familiar to me and I felt that helped my experience rather than it feeling like it was babying a concept I already know. I borrowed this from the library but feel the need to have it on my shelves.
