  • searching for a specific feeling

my best friend and I have convos daily about a specific feeling we’re searching for in books. what we’re looking for in a book:

    • teenage intensity of emotions and thoughts, where small things feel so huge and monumental and like the world is ending
    • the fragility and importance of friendship, what others think/say about you, what you’re putting out into the world, how you want to be perceived and/or remembered
    • a tad bit of depressive themes that result from not feeling enough - whether that’s cool enough, pretty enough, different from your family enough, whatever
    • searching for sense of self or sense of purpose
    • for some added flair, secretly trying to understand your sexuality, and trying to figure out if you’re supposed to feel certain ways about certain things relating to that

So, pagebound, tell me what you’ve got! The only book that has really felt this way, at least for my bestie (I’m still waiting on my hold to be ready), is Don’t Let The Forest In.

I’m not sure what to say about McCurdy’s debut novel. What I know is that the writing style was very engaging. Snapshots of intense feelings, thoughts; glimpses of pivotal moments, mundane moments; glistening descriptions of the depths of heartache and longing, shattered sense of self and coping. I hated 90% of what I read. It was hard to read about Waldo’s grooming experience, and the perverted Mr. Korgy’s desperate attempts at reasoning and meaning-making.

I am SO GLAD Waldo did not hop on that damn plane to Hawaii, and I am SO GLAD she got slapped in the face with the harsh reality of her mother’s behavior as it was obviously very freeing for Waldo.

My brain feels kinda muddled after putting this down but I think McCurdy did exactly what tf she set out to do with this one.
