Ignoring the whole Bardugo aging them up in the newest editions, the ages of the characters are not totally throwing me. Whilst I'm not instinctively reading them as in their late teens, historically (and presently) there have been children their age or younger involved in gangs, crime syndicates, rebellions, war etc. The concept of 'adolescence' is relatively new. For much of history once you hit something like 10-12 that's it, off to work you go and earn your keep, you're a fully fledged member of society.

I immediately think of figures like Joan of Arc and Alexander the Great. Joan was 17 when she led troops in the lifting of the Siege of Orléans, and Alexander was 16 when he had his first military command and started quashing rebellions and conquering land. There are many more young military and gang leaders, and followers, throughout history across the world that just show it's really not that strange. Don't underestimate children and teens.

Also, so far in SoC specifically, you definitely get those dumb moments where you see their youth between the trauma and life experience. It's not really mindless, slapping on 'they're seventeen, by the way.'

Definitely a highlight of the year! I immediately took every protagonist of this book to my heart. They are wonderful, courageous and intelligent. And I think it's very fitting that they are teenagers. Otherwise, some stupidities and funny sayings simply wouldn't have fit into the situation. All in all, a great exciting fantasy novel with perfect romantic subplot.
