To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Dungeon Crawler Carl. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of roleplaying games most of the jokes will go over a typical reader's head. There's also Carl's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Dungeon Crawler Carl truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Carl's existencial catchphrase "Goddamnit Donut," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Matt Dinninan's genius unfolds itself on the page. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Dungeon Crawler Carl tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. ... Needless to say, I didn't care for this one. The plot is nothing to write home about, the writing style below par but passable, so all that's left to offer is the humor. And, if you can't tell from the copy pasta, if you enjoy Rick and Morty style humor, then you'll probably eat this up. But if you're like me and that's not your jam, maybe give this one a pass. Or read it anyway and form your own opinion. I'm not your mom.

Yeah I'm a quarter of the way through and I haven't laughed literally even once. 😭 But it's reading very quickly, so I'll finish it up just to officially get it off my radar.

Finally got the hold from my library to see what all the fuss is about... just finished chapter 1 and honestly not looking super promising. But I know I'm very, very early, so I'm going to give it a chance to get as funny as everyone says it is.
