I turned the last page and am now definitely frowning at the wall. The book was beautiful and unsettling in equal measure. Andrew's writing and Thomas' drawings were amazing and I found myself enjoying both more than I expected. The gore and plant-horror elements were well-done, but they didn't hit me as especially extreme despite what many other reviews were saying. Maybe I'm more used to gore, or maybe the intensity was lowered for a YA audience. Either way, if that's what you came to this book for, you may want to lower your expectations.
The ending left me unsatisfied. The story built itself up with the promise of something amazing, only to fall flat. It felt like climbing a mountain for a breathtaking view, only to be greeted by a dry wasteland. I can appreciate the idea of open endings, but here it just felt incomplete.
But don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, I just have quite a few gripes with it.

Was kinda expecting a darker end because it's called a twisted tale. This was okay too but honestly I don't think much changed from the original aside from some extra details and the ending. It was still pretty fun to read and I loved seeing the friendships blossom.

My first Brandon Sanderson book :))
You got me at "The girl wondered why men so often used food to describe women's features. There was a hunger to such men that was best avoided." and Glorf.

This was so good I need moreeeeeeee. The creatures are so cute and I like Sciona and Larran and Caz so much. I also loved how the magic system is very witchy and anyone can do it, not the born-with-a-specific-power type of magic.
🧎🏻♀️ < this is me realizing it's a standalone book and I have nothing to look forward to.
