The Wordsworth version of this book has foot notes to explain and give context to some of the text. And I love how you can just expect certain things to be explained… in a certain manner. I especially loved the following quote:

“The author, who has resided for 5 or 6 years in Italy (116)…”

The protagonist keeps mentioning that her community has caught on to her penchant for crossing the line from armchair investigation to ethically dubious snooping when it comes to specifically local murders. A repeat of "why are you so interested in this...?"

I have the same question.

Maybe it's because I'm starting this series in the middle, or maybe I'm just not in a season where cozy mysteries and their flippant regard for legal/ethical specifics are appealing to me, but I am having trouble staying invested in this book. It feels almost forced, and the prose feels very tell-don't-show a majority of the time.

I have a few of these that I bought on sale... I'm hoping that this gets better (though based on reviews this is doubtful) and/or that this really is the weakest one of the bunch and the others are significantly stronger. I really want to like it...
