It took me a little while to get into the story (I was struggling a bit to stay engaged at first), but after the halfway point, I was hooked. I always struggle with the first book of any series because I'm not big on exposition, but Roshar is such a rich world that was incredible to learn more about. Even in parts where I wasn't super interested, any information about the planet and culture fascinated me.
Sanderson has also gotten SO much better at writing women since Era one of Mistborn - both in his newer books, but especially here. Not only is the specific system of patriarchy on Roshar so interesting, the named women are some of the most complex fantasy women I've seen in most books (written by men, at least). Jasnah and Shallan are such standouts to me, though Dalinar win out as my favorite character by the end.
Great start to the series! I'm anxiously trying to prepare my heart and soul for the horrors everyone is surely going to experience throughout the rest of the series 😭
