"I was as much scared as angry, but where does a slave put anger? We could be angry with one another; we were human. But the real source of our rage had to go without address, swallowed, repressed."

This part really resonated with me, at a time when I'm trying to find productive places to put my anger and rage at all the injustices I'm witnessing. What does it mean to not have such outlets? To have to hold and bury traumas deep within you that they surface in future generations? When survival is the priority and everything else a luxury.

I love that the concept of "code switching"-- and how it relates to survival-- appears to be a central tenant of James' story. How does our use of language influence the way we relate to people and our environment? How does it influence our perceptions of ourselves? Others' perceptions of us? Lots of good questions bubbling up...

  • How are you creating your personal curriculum?

I've seen the "personal curriculum" trend going around and was curious how folks were approaching it. I have lots of books I want to read but have a hard time prioritizing, so I thought this might help. Are you grouping books by theme? Are you including other mediums (e.g., podcast episodes, long-form essays, blog posts, etc.)? Tell me about your strategy!
