the main reason I didn’t enjoy this book particularly is its consistent habit of telling rather than showing. I agree with the political messaging of the book but even so I was bored by the preachy style of writing— I just think there are more effective and artistic ways to deliver the same messages.
As a queer and mixed race person, I found Benny’s story in particular unrelatable and out of place. Little of her narrative rang true to me and my experiences, and I felt that the author brought in a lot of stereotypes and assumptions about those two identities. However, maybe other mixed race and queer people feel differently— that’s just how I felt personally.
Overall, I felt like the author wasnt willing relinquish enough control to let the reader figure out the messages on their own. Instead, she laid them out multiple times directly in the text, and it got exhausting and repetitive.

I don’t really want to dunk on a book about teaching kids about feminism but…
This is a part of a genre of kid’s books that I really dislike that is directly marketed to parents rather than kids. a kid who is in the age range for board board books doesn’t know about the feminist movement and the book doesn’t explain anything about it. It’s just using the word “feminist” as a cash grab to liberal parents while not actually teaching in any meaningful way about gender equality in a way young kids can understand.
