My first mafia-esque book and it being combined with fantasy was perfect! The romance was very much a perfect slow burn imo. The characters are all very endearing and interesting. I think maybe a hundred pages or so could’ve been scrapped just bc i don’t really need to read about reheated mozzarella sticks or washing laundry lol but that’s alright while it slowed the pace i still was engaged enough to keep reading. The author does a great job with choosing her words. This book felt easy to read while still having moments of spectacular prose. Unfortunately the ending was a little… odd to me. Finished the book feeling very unsatisfied bc it made it seem like nearly half the book was wasted on unimportant topics (it wasn’t really wasted but the book not having substance after the end reveal left me feeling hollow about my experience) Truly excited for the sequel to come out, hopefully i remember to pick it up.

Whew bit of a jumpscare with the "catching my drift" line. I'm no historian but I am willing to wager a bet that this isn't exactly historically accurate vernacular... Definitely took me out of the story for a beat. Something you'd think the editor would have caught.
(Also, very possible that this was removed in final copies, as I am reading a secondhand ARC -- would love confirmation if anyone happens to have a final copy handy!)

they say not to judge a book by its cover but i simply can’t help it - the cover is stunning and im expecting nothing less than an enthralling read. The FMC’s introduction was perfect. I’ve heard so much hype over this author so hopefully i’ll have found a new fave!

I'm all invested, I will report back at 50%, there's soooo much that could happen between now and then. I don't even know what I want to happen at this point!
