hi everyone! i am thinking of reading the poppy war soon, but i am wondering if its an easy read or not? is the magic system complex? i assume the story itself might be heavy, but i could be wrong. i really enjoy kuang’s writing styles so i expect that i’ll enjoy the series!

I always notice that books like these have characters who are desperate and have nowhere else to go so they stay in a place that has a million red flags. I get a little annoyed when I read that, but I am somehow just now realizing that if they weren't desperate, they would leave as soon as they see these red flags.

I genuinely cannot believe theres so many bad reviews on this. I might get disappointed later on, but I honestly think this book is so good 😭 There was a part that dragged but other than that, I'm having a great time.

I want to start off by saying this book is EXTREMELY triggering. There are dark topics that I am surprised made its way into a YA novel, but she doesn't go into too much graphic detail. Even though she doesn't it will still make you want to take a second some times. I don't think I will ever stop thinking about this book. The ending is gut-wrenching and leaves you both satisfied and dissatisfied. Sadie is a tragic character that you root for till the very end. I didn't really care for West or his podcast, but I loved the podcast moments. I know some of it was repetitive especially since it usually replayed what you learned about Sadie's whereabouts in the previous chapter, but it gives you more information that Sadie couldn't have known. I really liked that. There were some parts where the story kinda slowed, but it was an extremely enjoyable (feels like the wrong word based on the material, but I'll just say that) read that will leave you begging for more. After reading This is Not a Test and this, I think Summers is starting to become one of my favorite authors.
