yesteryear shocked me in so many ways. it both exceeded and did not meet my expectations at the same time. throughout the course of the story, i couldn't truly tell where the plot was going, and i did not like that things began to pick up in the last 100 pages. i feel as though yesteryear is slightly mis-marketed, trying to portray a different image.
before i get into my full review-- yesteryear is lacking SERIOUS trigger warnings. i felt disgusted by so many instances throughout the course of the story. there is abuse of all kinds, mentions of suicide, sexual assault, blatant homophobia, and probably more that i am missing.
i always love a villainous or morally grey main character, as i feel it gives the story a bit of an edge. the thing with that though is there is a specific way of writing them. i shouldn't feel completely apathetic to a story's main character.
my empathy for natalie was extremely short lived. sure, she shouldn't have been bullied in college, no one deserves that. i think she is a wonderfully complex character, but as the story progressed, i cared less and less as to what was going to happen to her. honestly, i hated all of the characters in yesteryear except for the children.
yesteryear fell very flat for me. given the premise of the story, i was expecting the plot to be thicker, but soon found out that it was more character-focused. i felt compelled to DNF multiple times throughout, because i just didn't care enough about the characters. i simply wasn't rooting for anyone.
i didn't appreciate most of the ending, but for the story, it does make sense. what i took away from yesteryear is that nothing is as it seems, influencers are fake, and let your kids express themselves freely. oh, also don't move to the middle of nowhere and start a farm away from society and poorly attempt to control your children and don't get married so young.
