This was beautifully written. There were so many scenes that I specifically admired because of the language used, like the descriptions of apples in the store room (wink wink) and the chapter about the fleas carrying the plague. These descriptions of the husband: "He is all tinder and flint, sending out sparks to ignite and kindle," and "She can sense that other, big-house self melt off him, like wax sliding from a lit candle, revealing the man within." I like that she refused to name the man (who we know is Will Shakespeare) so that the focus remains on Agnes and the other women in the novel, but I wonder if it did impede the intimacy between reader and family? Then again, a big point of the story was the disconnection between them all, especially husband and wife, in grief. I really loved reading this one and it makes me want to watch the movie. 4.5 stars, solidly.
