  • Daily Reading Goals (subheading: will you stop in the middle of a chapter?)

How do you decide when to stop reading for that day or particular sitting? Do you set a reading goal for the day? Do you do this by setting a timer, establishing a number of pages to get through, determining an appropriate stopping point in the book based on chapter/part lengths?

Do you go purely based off of vibes and when you can no longer continue you get up and walk away?

My husband and I were debating this the other day. Personal Context: If I sit down to read, I will stick my bookmark ahead in the book as a benchmark for myself. If I get to that point and still feel like continuing to read for that sitting, I’ll move it ahead once more and continue on. If I can’t make it to that predetermined pause point, I may readjust based on time and energy. My one rule though, I refuse to stop in the middle of a chapter if at all possible. My husband on the other hand will simply close the book (sometimes with a bookmark of some sort in place, other times not which is a whole separate debate!) and go onto the next thing whenever he feels necessary. I know of other people who set a reading goal for themselves in terms of number of minutes reading or pages read, regardless of where that would land them in the book. When they hit that benchmark, unless they’re really engrossed in the book, they’ll be done for that sitting/day.

Curious to know how others feel about this, one way or another!

When do you mark a book as reading?

I'm curious about when y'all mark a book as reading. Do you do it the moment you decide to read it, when you start reading, or at a later point?

Lately, I've been restless and impatient and can sometimes start a book only to immediately get bored or don't get sucked in right away and am done with it (for the time being). I hate marking as DNF so soon and especially when I often intend to go back to it. I used to immediately mark as reading and then if I move on from it, just delete it from my shelf but more recently, I've waited until I've gotten to the point that I know I'm into the book or at least know that I won't hop to another instead before marking as reading. This most recent one, I just marked reading at about 15%.

Anyone else do this or just me?

  • New Friends on Pagebound

What determines whether you'll follow someone? Lately I've been occasionally scrolling through new users and depending on the compatability rating and their finished books following them, I know some follow just because they are followed, or maybe running into a user frequently, but how do you decide who you want to follow, where have you found boundling friends?

    How low do you go?

What's the lowest average rating you would consider reading?

I give most books I read a 3 star rating, but I was searching for books the other day and realised that I didn't add books to my TBR if they had a rating of less than 3.5, so I'm wondering if I need to rethink my rating system.

Update: I'm so glad I asked this question, your responses have helped change the way I approach my reading choices. I've always known what I like, but I've found it hard to own my feelings for fear of judgment. I let the numerical value of books impact whether I am proud of liking them. Also, I've felt awkward about holding my hand up and stating that I didn't like a book if it's popular because I didn't want to rain on anyone's parade. Hearing everyone here being so confident about liking what they like, and accepting the subjectivity of books has really helped me challenge the black and white thinking holding me back from book joy. Thanks 😊
