i really dont understand the stakes here, and i cant seem to suspend disbelief for this novel because theres no logic to the whole world somehow contributing to luc's self esteem. since when was the pr guy—who is also a c list celebrity's son—a make or break factor in the organization of a charity dinner? i think the gravitas placed on a (non)issue is exaggerated. idk any pr people who would ruin the company/charity they were representing. someone compared luc to dan howell, and as much as i want to agree because that would make the novel more palatable to my phannie ass who used to write fanfic in 2014, that doesnt seem right to me. dan isnt self aggrandizing but also covertly narcissistic, which luc is. but i'll stick it out, hopefully the love interest beats his ass or something

pls dont get me wrong i am so grateful to be doing my MA in literature and i am always so excited for it, but it is sometimes mentally demanding to the point where i get burnt out from reading and decide to doomscroll instead to wind down from something that i used to do to wind down. which is so ironic bc i literally enrolled in this program bc i love to read.
all these books ive been reading that i hear about all the time are so great and i see their merit as to why theyre in the canon but i guess what takes the fun and engagement out of the books is the fact that its graded and u have to interact with the work based on a rubric and a prescribed set of theories??? if i had the liberty i would genuinely go crazy—i know i did when i was assigned earnest hemingway's old man and the sea with specific instructions from the prof of "no instruction." but say for example when i was required to read olga tokarczuk's books of jacob i was given two other books as my theories to interpret the novel and bc of that i just gave up on the book after part 2 😔
and with productivity-signalling by requiring journal publication for graduation and my professors making us academic mules by churning out at least 1 academic paper per month so we have a lot of work to choose from to submit to different academic journals (at least in my country), it gets to a point where u wonder if "passion" and "love for reading" is a valid reason to enroll in a masters in literature, or is stamina a more sustainable source of motivation 😕

zora hurston's prose is insane, and its so natural. many writers are contrived but you just know the poeticization of her prose is coming from somewhere in the depths of her research as an anthropologist. to her, her poetic sound is just her telling it like it is. that being said, i understand the intentions of writing the dialogue phonetically, but it was a challenge to read. luckily there is an audiobook and doing a readalong while ruby dee essentially read the dialogue for me while i highlight her intense prose was so helpful. ruby dee was incredible as an audiobook narrator by the way. you are immersed in the world of the novel; i haven't dreamt of being part of the universe of a novel in a while, and i thank ruby dee's interpretation of the novel for that.
