āGranted, the plants all looked dead or dying. Granted, the windows of the house stared down like eye sockets in a row of skulls, yes, but so what? Actual rows of skulls wouldnāt affect me so strongly. I knew a collector in Paris ⦠well, never mind the details. He was the gentlest of souls, though he did collect rather odd things. But he used to put festive hats on his skulls depending on the season, and they all looked rather jolly.ā
Alright look. Look. This is the first book Iāve read by this author, and from the excitement Iāve seen this series and others get I knew I was in for great things, and even more than that I knew Astarion was in good hands. But having read, what, 6%??? Astarion isnāt in good hands. Astarion is in GREAT HANDS!!!!!
This humour is right down my street and I love the writing style. I canāt wait to read every book the author has ever written.

I think the author produced something that matters here, but if weāre being totally and completely real I think the writing style just isnāt for me. Itās too fragmented and choppy and itās likely thatās on purpose but I found it difficult to stick with. It was difficult to connect with it, it felt too polished and like it was trying too hard to come off a certain way at times.
The animal cruelty that was talked about in the book was also. A lot. And I donāt know, it threw me off quite harshly and I canāt stop thinking about it (I would really really really like to stop thinking about it) and that definitely affected my enjoyment. Like just sitting here writing this is feel vaguely ill.
Iām glad I gave it a chance though, because itās a book Iāve been wanting to read for years, and even though I didnāt really āenjoyā it, I still think I got something positive from it at times.

As time passes this book deserves to be remembered as one of the classics. The dedication to retaining humanity even when faced with people who do not deserve it is Gildaās legacy.
It was interesting to see what the author wrote of the future but for me the best part of this book was the glimpse into the past and the way Gilda wove through the time periodsāto how she stayed the same and how she changed, and the people whose lives the touched.
