I had read a little bit of the discourse before listening to the audiobook, so I went into this expecting some kind of bombshell memoir with sordid details about her and her husband’s marital situation. Honestly? It was fine. If anything, I felt like the entire book was kind of surface level.
It’s interesting that Shrill was so of its time (2016) and this book reveals the cracks in the image Lindy presented all those years ago. Shrill was very “2016” in that it was outraged, indignant, but forward-looking and optimistic in the feminist way that so many of us were operating under during the first Trump admin, Me Too, etc. Adult Braces seems to reflect a lot of what many of us feel today, 10 years later; we’re tired, overwhelmed, and can’t really bring ourselves to look to the future with hope or excitement. All of us, including Lindy, seem more hesitant with our happiness. Idk if any of this is making ANY sense…
Anyway, onto the poly/throuple situation. In my opinion, this is more of a big deal because of Aham’s unhinged email to the Slate reporter and all of their IRL responses to the public’s reception of the book. Lindy doesn’t really go that deep in the book itself. Do I like Aham? Not necessarily. Do I think Lindy is actually happy with Roya as their third? If she says she’s happy, who am I to say she’s not? Maybe Lindy’s next book will reveal new truths about their arrangement, or discuss how she REALLY feels in hindsight. But, honestly, the three of them have been together for 5 years already. Sure, I can side eye polyamory as dictated by one person in a relationship. However, to proclaim that Lindy West MUST be unhappy and has only agreed to this because of her low self esteem or because she’s delulu is infantalizing. She’s an adult and can decide how she wants to live her life.
