    My Thorns For Your Roses

    My Thorns For Your Roses

    Kristen Argyres

True love takes many forms. As one of the few survivors of her generation, Lark wants to live a quiet, peaceful life. All she needs is a tolerable husband. On her 24th birthday, Lark offends the local faerie lord, the shapeshifter Tamlin, who punishes her with a rose rooted in her flesh. In her efforts to convince Tamlin to undo his handiwork, Lark visits the forest daily and discovers the breathtaking and terrifying wonders of his realm. Despite her pragmatic nature tugging her toward a mortal huntsman, Lark falls for Tamlin. After a near-fatal accident exposes Tamlin’s cruel deception, Lark moves to the capital to accept a marriage of convenience. Yet when she learns of Tamlin’s capture, Lark must choose whether to secure her future or risk it all to save the love of her life from his cannibal ex. -- MY THORNS FOR YOUR ROSES is a "Tam Lin" retelling written in the spirit of the Scottish faerie tale and folksong - for readers who enjoyed the fae in Heather Fawcett's EMILY WILDE series, retellings like Naomi Novik's SPINNING SILVER, and the complicated family dynamics of Kell Woods' AFTER THE FOREST and UPON A STARLIT TIDE. Predictable and formulaic, this book is a solid romantasy that doesn’t add anything new to the genre. This book does a large amount of trope farming that while some may enjoy, it can also be tedious and cringey. This book reads like Fourth Wing and From Blood and Ash had a love child.

Meryn started out as a fairly solid FMC, who suffered from her writing. She is naive, deliberately obtuse at times, and obstinate. She picks up again in the last 10% of the book and I’m hoping for a satisfying character arc for her.

The love interests and love triangle were predictable from a mile away but the authors have a chance to give them good arcs as well with the second book. I do like Stark, but it’s giving Xaden and Rhysand. And it would be nice to get a different MMC from time to time.

I absolutely HATED the pet names in the book for the FMC and the audiobook made this even more of an ick for me. However, I did love the dual narrator style of the audiobook.

I will be picking up the next book but I’m concerned that it’ll be, for me, like it was for Fourth Wing and I’ll DNF the series at the third book (I’m really hoping this isn’t the case).

Sylvia is becoming one of my favourite strong female characters! She's a badass! I love how she defended herself against the soldier.
