This was insanely beautiful and I can’t stop thinking about it.

It feels a bit weird for me to review this book cause, it being a classic, it almost feels like I have no business in saying if this was good or bad. It exists, it’s iconic and that’s that. But I’ll still say my opinion lmao. Because this is quite an old novel, I was scared that I wasn’t gonna like it because of the writing style being different than what I’m used to, but honestly it didn’t bother me that much? I even think it enhanced the beauty of the story.

Even though it’s a short book, I love that so much happens but in its own time, with nothing feeling rushed. The characters are properly introduced with time, and I just loved Carmilla. It was so interesting to learn more about her story, but also the story of vampires in general. And I obviously loved the relationship, even if at times a bit weird considering the nature of it, between Carmilla and Laura.

Probably my favorite quote from the book: “I have been in love with no one, and never shall," she whispered, "unless it should be with you." (…) Her soft cheek was glowing against mine. "Darling, darling," she murmured, "I live in you; and you would die for me, I love you so."

    Happy Sunday! 🌸 QOTW

Happy Sunday, Pagebound! It's been another week 🎉🌸 Hope you've all had a good one!

☕QOTW☕: If you were the main character of a book, what would you like the genre to be and why?

I would probably choose romance! Not only am I a hopeless romantic and love to romanticise life, but a lot of books I've loved the most are in the romance genre or at least feature tropes surrounding it! For example, the Lancaster Prep series by Monica Murphy explores a variety of different relationship dynamics which I thoroughly enjoyed, especially due to the uniqueness of each individual character and couple in each installment 🤍 Other books to quote include I Love You I Love You I Love You by Laura Dockrill and Picking Daisies on Sundays by Liana Cincotti, both of which were 5☆ reads for me!

Not only this, but I feel the romance genre is very broad and can be adapted in many more ways than we often think of 🤔 It's a very adaptable genre with transferable tropes that feature in other novels in different genres, although I feel like mine would be quite steady to fast paced, especially since I got engaged exactly a year after meeting my fiancé (we started dating 3 days after meeting, so I think I move pretty quickly, but what can I say, I'm not the most patient when I know what I want, and neither is he apparently) 💍

Might be a controversial post, but I wanted people's opinion on "consuming smut as reading"

I recently got some flak on booktwt for calling out a person's reading hours. Again, nothing against them personally, I just pointed out the fact that they had 17 hours a day of reading, which only leaves 7 hours of sleeping and nothing else.

Then I took a look at the books they had read in the meantime. I was happy to find books like Middlemarch and others which I adore so much, but most of their reading hours were spent on books titled "Motherbucker" "Bucked up" and other books with naked men on cover and a pun on sex as title.

I just want to ask if anyone else finds it performative, something done just to boost their reading hours and post on internet or do people actually actively consume 17 hours a day of smut. Other's response to my criticism was that "Stop whining that you can not match their reading aptitude" but what aptitude does it take to read the same smut over and over? Would my consumption of porn be a fair addition to my letterboxd watch hours? I just want to engage in a sincere discussion.

  • The LGTBIQA+ debate in books: to be a plot point or not

I'm talking about something that I've heard multiple times in regards to LGTBIQA+ media in general, but I'd like to focus on books because I think it hits different bc I usually only read queer rep from queer authors. It's about whether a queer character should have their identity as a main point in character or just let it be "natural" and barely mentioned. Many things have a role in this situation: stereotypes, whether that character is a MC or a secondary one, if they're the only queer character in the cast, and whether their identity is solely based on the pain coming along with it.

There is indeed a tendency to make queer characters' plot orbit around their non-normative identity, and another one to make the world be ideally okay with their existence. It's VERY hard to find a perfect balance, and it would probably not sit well with everyone anyway.

So, question, what do you think? Which possibility do you like best? Do you have any examples of books where this matter just felt right to you? I'm very curious!

As a person with gender studies (humble moment), I personally think none are incorrect (as long as written with respect and proper rep, as well as other circumstances). I think everyone lives their identity differently, and some people might want to relate to all the difficulties coming with being queer while others need a world where it's not only respected but also not considered "different". It depends on the writer, and it depends on the reader. I hope I expressed myself correctly!
