So, the poor wanted half an acre to call their own, rather than having to rent a single room with a shower in the kitchen, while the rich wanted places to grow massive vineyards and frolic without having to look at the poor.
Oh Ancient Rome you’re not so different you and me. Some things never do change >:(

I am always nervous approaching ancient Roman and Greek history (Egypt got me in the divorce as a kid) because many sources assume quite a bit of background knowledge that I just don’t have. This book is not one of those sources. It holds my hand in a kind and joking way that I really appreciate. Take this quote, for example:
Before we get there, though, we need to see how murder became so central to Roman politics, and I’m sorry but it involves a lot of politics and chat about land reform policies and it’s awful. We can get through this together; I believe in us.
Very lighthearted and jesting tone while still getting the point across. I’m excited to read more!

They didn't know beauty, these boys. They saw blurred outlines and thought they knew the picture.
I love these lines, and I feel like they ring true, both in the book and in real life. Want to be "beautiful"? Sand down all of the interesting parts of your appearance to become as palatable to the masses as possible.
