I have no idea why Ali Hazelwood, a former academic herself, would think that a grad student dating a professor in her OWN DEPARTMENT is acceptable under any circumstances, especially if he’s well known and influential. He can give her major advantages by promoting her work at conferences etc and could end her career with a single bad word through his network. The conflicts of interest are INSANE even if he’s not her direct supervisor.
But whatever because the romance is SO GOOD HE’S SO DOWN BAD OMG

I recently committed to my dream PhD program and I thought what better way to celebrate than to revisit my favorite academic rom-com!

I think I was probably not the intended audience for this book. The early parts detailing Patti’s early life and years with Robert were interesting and gave great insight into the hustle and struggle of young artists in the 60s. And the end about Robert’s later years and struggle with AIDS were very moving. But in the middle there was a ton of name dropping of different characters involved in the art and music scene at the time, which didn’t have much significance for me as someone who isn’t really into rock and roll from that time period, so it ended up getting quite boring.
Now having read this I want to go give Patti’s music a listen. Maybe I’ll return to this book after I become a bit more familiar with her world, and I’m sure I’ll take away something new from it then.

Idk how you did it Ruth Ozeki but you may have written the most brilliant and insightful novel of all time. Honestly have no words for how perfect it was.
The book deals spectacularly with difficult themes of family, depression, suicide, bullying, gender-based violence, war, morality, and the nature of time and existence, with witty dialogue and characters that you truly come to know and empathize and laugh with throughout the book. I cried when I finished it, and I almost never cry when I read. Read this book if you need a jolt out of the routine and mundanity of your life, it’ll make you think about how crazy and wonderful life really is.
Thank you Pagebound creators for bringing me to this book through the reading challenge!
