When I was younger and I still didn't know any english, I read books in croatian and then I didn't find anything wrong with them. Now I read exclusively in english because the translations of english books seem so dull to me - croatian is a language with so many dialects, I could say I speak only like 25% of it and yet, even though original language of the book is colorful and packed with jargon, croatian translation seems to only use standard croatian (which helps with reaching a wider audience, but I just think it would be better if different dialects were used to make a parallel between dialects in other languages and wouldn't it be fun to learn some new words and phrases in your own language?).
Another thing that irks me about croatian translation is that, when the original scene is so deep and emotional, the standard seems to just pull that straight out of the book and make it cringe. Because, how do you connect with characters and scenes when the only people in real life who speak standard croatian are robots (even our politicians don't speak in full standard)?
What do you think about this? What's your opinion on reading in your native language (I'm also interested in hearing from native english speakers, do you guys experience similar things while reading in english)? Does reading in your native language have any perks that you really like?
