"We never thought of ourselves as witches, my mother and I. For this was a word invented by men, a word that brings power to those who speak it, not those it describes."
I liked this a lot more than The Sirens. I thought I was going to be reading a fun witchy story and it turned out to be about women overcoming abuse and rape. I really liked their stories, especially Altha's, but they were also very similar stories which I found interesting. Seeing 3 different generations of women having to endure the same/similar trauma was beautiful but also a bit dispiriting. I loved their endings and their powers were beautiful though. I was a bit annoyed that only 2 male characters were not vile pigs and that one of them was already dead before the events of the story. That being said, I really loved Graham and Violet's relationship and all the other men got what they deserved. Also, this may be the only time I didn't hate the "naming the baby over this inspiring person" trope.
