La fortuna di "La sposa cadavere", che parte da un'antichissima leggenda ebraica per evolversi in un gioco di cornici, è particolarmente interessante perché non si limita solo ai suoi contemporanei. Oltre ad aver influenzato alcuni delle maggiori scrittrici e scrittori del gotico inglese, ha notevoli affinità anche con "L'uomo della sabbia" di E.T.A. Hoffmann o "La donna dal collier di velluto" di Alexandre Dumas; giunge infine ai giorni nostri quando, nel 2005, il grande regista Tim Burton ne ha tratto il pluripremiato film d'animazione in stop-motion, "Corpse Bride". Anche se la storia ha sempre risvolti e finali differenti nelle diverse versioni che si susseguono nei secoli e attraversano il mondo, il tema centrale che permane è quello dell'espiazione di una colpa o della riparazione di un torto subito nel contesto di un legame sentimentale.
