a note on curation: while there is a large crossover between afro/africanfuturism and sci-fi (and other speculative genres), afro/africanfuturism is specific in its interweaving of african/Black history, lore, and culture through the use of futurist elements. this means that the texts represented don’t necessarily need to be hard sci-fi or captital S Speculative. it also means that many of these texts can be considered to be in conversation with one another.
the distinction between africanfuturism and afrofuturism is that, while afrofuturism tends to focus on diasporic experiences, africanfuturism is centred in and about africa, by Black african authors.
many authors who work in the tradition of afro/africanfuturism are incredibly prolific within the subgenre; i’m attempting to represent no more than three books per author for this reason, so that this list doesn’t become overwhelming to look through.
