Niche Romance Recs
I've been reading genre romance for going-on-30 years now and I wanted to highlight some of the books that I've enjoyedbut that have either faded into obscurity or never made it big to begin with. Be Aware! Some of these books are going to be pretty dated! Please check the original publishing dates so you know what you're getting into. I'm also happy to provide any CWs/TWs/heat levels for any book listed if you ask in the comments! (Note: I've also included some romantic fantasy/scifi in this list.)

I could NOT make a list of romance novels without a book from Ms. Bev!!! Really I should also include at least one of the first books in one of her romance series, but it’s been so long since I read them that I don’t remember a good entry point. Which probably means it’s time for a reread. 🤣
100%, anytime is a good time to reread her! Haha. Tbf, Indigo was my starting point but I feel like Rebel is good for a newer installation or people who want to dip their toes into the genre I’ve noticed. But Through the Storm is such a Classic™️.
Yes so many of these are like "romance classics" in my mind!

I am excited for Julia Quinn's book box for that reason - so many great books to revisit!
Oh man, I just had to look up that book box because I missed that it was happening but the books they had in the kickstarter were all incredible choices! I love that JQ is using her popularity from Bridgerton’s success to highlight other authors in her genre!
Ahh yes!! It was an epic debate with myself whether I could afford it but the amount of books I thrift/swap or use the library for I figured it was worth it- and if I don't keep them I can use them for great gifts!

Thank you! I’m rereading the Elemental Blessings series right now and had to include it. Zoe is one of my favorite romantic fantasy heroines of all time.
This list actually started as a rec list for someone who is new to reading romances. I’m thinking of spinning it off into another “Romantic Fantasies Before ‘Romantasy’” list that focuses on some of the great fantasy romances and romantic fantasies that were published before the Romantasy trend took off on tiktok during COVID.
Think that would be super interesting! Especially considering modern romantasy as it stands has a problem with quality of content vs quanity of demand right now
Modern romantasy is SUCH a publishing clusterf*ck right now. 😭 I try really hard not to be one of those “Books today are terrible! Nothing compares to the classics I grew up with!” types of people…but at the same time so much of what’s popular right now is so clearly trying to take advantage of the booktok-capitalism-money-train at the expense of quality. (If I see another trope list pretending to be a book synopsis I will simply hurl myself into the sun.)
Okay yeah, this new list is definitely going to happen too. 🤣
