Collapse Pt. 1: It Is Later Than You Think

Or: reasons I'm not hopeful about our increasingly apocalyptic circumstances, and a defense of despair

I believe hopelessness is unfairly pathologized and scapegoated for our collective failure to take meaningful action against ecocide. Climate catastrophe is accelerating. Collapse is underway, and you're not crazy for noticing. You don't need to feel bad about feeling bad.

Hi! :) How u doing?

2

older, wiser, marginally more literate hope all is well with you 💖

2

Excellente ! I'm all right, it's a beautiful day out ❤️ Read anything good lately?

2

glad to hear it :) i just visited LA for the first time (absolutely loved it) and found a little bookstore there with a section featuring LA writers so i picked up a recently reprinted short story collection by Kate Braverman that im literally addicted to. it gives old LA vibes lol but is also kind of sad bc she struggled with addiction and that’s present in nearly every story. but she is a truly gifted writer imo so it’s a lovely read ✨ what about you??

2

Oh this is lovely! Sounds like a cool shop. I have yet to read anything by her but I'm interested... Is this your first of hers? I'm working my way through English Eccentrics by Edith Sitwell rn which is totally unlike anything I've ever read, it's bonkers. I'm thoroughly enjoying myself

2

it is and im actually omw to a used bookstore rn to see if i can find any of her out of print works lol wow English Eccentrics sounds eccentric indeed ! it seems like you have such broad taste, what makes it feel so singular to you? 💖

2

Omg that's high praise. Good luck in your search!! In case you need backup, do you know about bookfinder.com? Well the eccentrics in question are eccentric indeed, but I'm kind of getting the impression that ol' Edith's a bit quirky herself. Her style of writing is so funny but I don't really know how to explain it. Very conversational, but in a way nobody speaks anymore. She has a really dry wit. It's a lot of fun!

2

reading a good dry wit is so fun. interested to see what you think by the end! and thank youuuu for this website…the bookstore was a bust but bookfinder is a goldmine wow!

2

:) Sorry you didn't find any yet, I hope they find their way to you soon!! And no problem!

Welcome!

1

thanks! I'm interested in reading more to deepen my climate crisis knowledge so I will be keeping an eye on this list

2

Awesome! If you have any recommendations ever, I'm all ears ❤️

1

Do you have any favourites on this list? I have been wanting to get to Jared Diamond for years 👀

2

That's a good question, but I am not sure how to further narrow it down!

2

That’s fair!

1

Oh, this is great! I like to see both sides of the coin or even a more nuanced view regarding this matter, although I'm more on the realistic side (or pessimistic with everything that's happening right now tbh 😬), so thank you for this!

2

Yeah absolutely! I feel like the more optimistic side has enough people representing it without my help 😅 but I don't often see climate messaging that feels truer to what is actually happening and to human psychology. Always happy to connect with likeminded folks!!
