So You Survived Fundie Homeschooling ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Recommendations for homeschool survivors, from homeschool survivors. These are books (and additional resources, in the comments) that have helped me and other former homeschoolers begin to fill in some gaping holes in our education.

Thanks to @skoobevoli for suggesting this list! :) I will keep updating it as I continue to read and learn. Suggestions welcome but for this one, a homeschool (student) background is preferred!

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES — Homeschoolers Anonymous (archived blog) — LoveJoyFeminism (archived blog), notably: "How I Lost Faith in the Pro-Life Movement" — Skeptical Science (website): debunks climate change myths — Slacktivist (blog), notably: "The 'Biblical View' That's Younger Than The Happy Meal"

Yessssss thank you!!! Now I don’t have to look up all the books individually haha

2

No problem! Easier to add to later as well :)

Teddy teddy teddy I love this list!! I’m extremely far from being fundie homeschooled but I love that there are people looking to help out those who are 🥹🥹

I highly recommend adding A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn, it’s a great starting point for anyone deconstructing from right wing history propaganda ❤️❤️

That's a great recommendation, thanks! You're right, this was invaluable for me and is a wonderful reference.

😍 Do you have any recommendations that were helpful to you?

2

forever a teddydee list fangirl

2

I don't understand it but I appreciate it 😌

2

I’ll have to brainstorm and see if I can recall some books that were helpful in my self education!! A lot of my learning came from tumblr ca.2015 lol

2

AH YES, the classics!

1

Lol this feels so specific to me 😂 Def relate to homeschooling leaving me with a large educational deficit, but so did public school 😅 double whammy for me! I really recommend adding "This is Vegan Propaganda" by Ed Winters to this list (especially since Everything is TB is on this list--these books go really hand in hand imo and have the broad educational approach that introduces you to the beginnings of a lot of other ideas and topics!)

2

Thanks, I'll check it out! And yeah I hear you, each system definitely has its weak points and places where kids fall through the cracks. I do think that homeschooling (and private school, to an extent) creates some, let's say unique kinds of educational malpractice, like I have never heard of an American public school explicitly teaching students that the earth is 6000 years old or that the fossil record is a hoax from Satan. That doesn't mean public school kids don't have their own unique issues too though, it's just not something I have any personal experience with/insight into. If you think there should be a list for public schoolers, I would encourage you to create one! :)

also, a book i’ve read and would love to recommend for this list is Wild Faith: How the Christian Right is Taking Over America by Tal Lavin. this book genuinely rewired my brain when I read it

2

(unfortunately on PB Wild Faith is entered under the author’s deadname, but his last name is the same either way! so just go by that if you go to add the book to this list)

2

Perfect, thanks! I'll add it right now :)

2

What a great list!!! thank you so much for creating this

2

Thanks! :)

2

Thank you for this list! I'd suggest Baby Dinosaurs On The Ark, which helped me understand evolution, something I wasn't taught anything about

2

Thanks, I've never heard of this one but it looks great! Teen me could have used this, lol.

2

Teddy, this is an amazing list! Well done you!!!

I really hope being able to pin it helps it find it's way to people who need it!

2

Thank you, me too! :)

I am SAT

Hello, welcome! ❤️

How do you feel about books deconstructing specific aspects of Christianity, but whose authors are still Christian? I have three off the top of my head, though I haven't read them for a looooong time

1

I think this list should be kind of outcome-agnostic in this sense, like the point of all this is education and critical thinking skills, not deconversion. It's not my fault those things often coincide 😅 but I think it's also possible for some people to come to a healthier, more informed understanding of Christianity. Tl;dr: they're cool

3

These are great, thank you!! I think I know some others that should be included, if I comb my tbr... Actually I think it's actively helpful to include some texts like this by Christians because they can feel less inherently threatening? And sometimes all you need is just very basic permission to think about things in a different way. Like I saw a book about why the Rapture is bad theology once at a library sale — my family was right there so I didn't buy it, but I skimmed some parts of it, and just knowing this is something Christians disagree about was enough to defang it.

2

Great! That was my thinking too.

The Lost World Of Genesis One by John H Walton was one of the of game changers for me¹, I was surrounded by so many different kinds of fundie creationism, which I really didn't like, but didn't have enough information or expertise to meaningfully articulate why I disagreed. Walton & DeGroat gave me evidence that there were people who could think critically & apply scientific principles to religion & faith & Christian beliefs. Finding that made the world feel more solid.

¹although it still uses the "faith is a chair you can't see" white label metaphor, which drives me up the wall. And likewise, I've not read it for a long time.

2

Oh, I've heard of this! Thanks for bringing it up
