The thematic usage of fruit in queer fiction is traced back to Florida Fruit Citrus Commission spokeswoman Anita Bryant, who fought hard to repeal gay rights and spread homophobic disinformation. Queer literature in the years after reclaimed the orange as a symbol of queer love and joy, and this has since expanded to other fruits.
