read the states + territories

books from all US states and territories. asking for recommendations! these books must a) be written by an author with a strong connection to the state or territory and b) take place largely in the state or territory. i want to try to prioritize, whenever possible, underrepresented voices / voices that america’s regime tries to silence.

please lmk if any of these authors or texts aren’t good representation.

i will comment a list with each state/territory + its associated book!

2

i am open to changing anything already listed, and want to make it clear this list is not in a yayyy america way but an attempt to try to read voices from all over the country i live in and learn more about my neighbors and their surroundings and struggles, and celebrate those voices instead of celebrating the system we continue to fight against. if that makes sense!!

I should have known there wouldn't be a Nebraska one 🥲 As a Nebraska native I'm now determined to find a good book for this list!

3

My Nebraska suggestion is My Antonia by Willa Cather. My mom's partner is an English professor who is a Cather scholar, so I feel like I gotta rep my girl Willa lol

5

Yes to Willa Cather!!

4

oh PERFECT!!! my hope was definitely to get suggestions from people native to the states whenever possible, i’ll add this one rn!!!

3

kitty, I found some!! The Magician’s Assitant by Ann Patchett, Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell (and actually several books by this author), and The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles

3

Liz, thank you!! I can't wait to read these

3

so many good recommendations!! thank u!!!

2

Quagmire Tiarello Couldn't Be Better by Mylisa Larsen and All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook by Leslie Connor are both set in Nebraska! Quamire Tiarello does start in New York, but he travels to Nebraska and is there for most of the book. :)

5

Thank you!!! I'm definitely adding these to my tbr!

3

A suggestion for Utah: Black Widows by Cait Quinn!

1

You could add "All that's left in the world" by Erik J Brown, it's about two boys who fall in love after the apocalypse and travel through the US to find other survivors.
