Let's get weird and existential!✌️🤪

Books that make you feel things. Or want to feel things. Or unsure of what you're feeling. Things get weird, you're unsettled and on the edge of your seat, and you can feel your brain physically rewiring itself while you're left questioning "WTF did I just read, and what do I do now?" The answer, of course, is to touch grass and read the next book on the list.

Want to know where to start? Overall my all-time fave pick is Brat. If you want a shorter story, try A Short Stay in Hell. If you want more horror, try Natural Beauty. If you want a unique writing style, try Several People Are Typing (it's literally written exclusively in Slack messages).

Oooh, Several People Are Typing sounds really fun! I've been loving books in "weird" formats lately (just read Shy by Max Porter recently and it was also written in a fun & unique way, albeit in a much different way than this book)

It's what sold it for me, there was this series I read in middle school that was all done in instant messages so it brought me back. It takes a bit to get used to but is so fun for storytelling, it feels like you're snooping through coworker's messages I had a great time (because I'm nosy lol)

Oooohhh what’s the best one for fall and/or winter??

2

For fall I'd say hands down Brat, themes of grief and learning to let go (so fall coded) and feels a bit "dark and spooky". For Winter it's more literal but Several People Are Typing takes place during the winter season and even features a snowstorm!

Would recommend Where I End and My Death! They both left me with definite WTF feelings

Added! Haven't read them myself but honestly can't wait to, the descriptions are so good. Honestly part of the reason I made this list was because I'm craving this type of weird story and hoping someone would comment suggestions so I could get recs so thank you! I love books like this and need more!

I love to hear that and hope you enjoy!

I love this! The Membranes may be a good fit for this! I'm still processing it and I read it over a year ago and the existential questions raised by it are.. haunting.

Okay this sounds like a perfect addition, thank you! Can’t wait to check it out.
