i just wanted to come on & say thank you to PB + its creators + the wonderful community on here. i joined PB in early august because (1) discussion-based book space sounded amazing & (2) i desperately needed a distraction while waiting for my bar exam results šµāš«
during bar prep i only got through 2 books in three months, i couldnāt listen to music for months because i was scared that lyrics would take up ātoo much spaceā in my head, i didnāt dare do anything that wasnāt prep-work. i took the exam in july & then curled up & cried about it for a week before i decided i needed to do something to pass the time until results released, so i decided to start reading again
yesterday, 9/22, i got my results: i passed the bar!!!!!!!!!! i am officially baileyisbooked, esquire š„¹š„¹š„¹š„¹š„¹š„¹š„¹š„¹ (obligatory nothing-i-say-on-here-is-associated-with-my-job-or-license-and-is-my-own-opinion blah blah blah) š©āāļøāļøš¾š¤
i am getting sworn in on friday & i am just so grateful & relieved. i am a first gen student for both college & law school, so this really was a crazy push for me & my family is thrilled šš«¶
i just wanted to say thank you to everyone, especially jennifer & lucy for creating a space like this. PB really saved my sanity for the last 8ish weeks while i waited. everyone has been wonderful, i have been reading books out of my normal range & loving them, & getting to talk to fantastic people about excellent books. itās just been such a bright spot in what has otherwise been a high anxiety / dread period.
so yeah, thatās kind of it. thank yall for the work you put in & thank you everyone for the discussions & posts & recs & comments & quests & everything else. i hope everyone is having a great week & reading a 5-star read ā¤ļøāš©¹š«šš„¹

Can this be read as a standalone and/or before Pumpkin Spice Cafe? My library hold for this one came available first and I don't want to wait!

Giovanni's Room was an achingly poetic and devastating story about an American man struggling with his sexuality in 1950s Paris. Baldwin's prose is captivating and so descriptive that you are flooded with all the emotions of the main character. I did struggle with the blatant and rampant misogyny of pretty much all the male characters, which was surely indicative of the setting, time period, and subculture. It made sense in the context of the novel to magnify the self hatred that David was struggling with, that he needed to lean on toxic masculinity to mask his own insecurities. His complexity as a character was moving and heart wrenching and made for a thought provoking read.

"Whenever I read one of Victoriaās vignettes, I always feel so dumb because I can hardly understand them at all. And then I blame myself. I think, Kira, this must be just too brilliant for you to grasp. Surely you must have missed something. Even though thereās always been this small voice inside of me that says, Um, what the fuck is this, please? This makes no sense. This is coy and this is willfully obscure and no one but Victoria will ever get this"
This quote encapsulates how I felt at the end of this book, and I think it contributes a bit of self awareness. This book reminded me of The Bell Jar in some ways, where I completely surrendered myself to the main character against my better judgement, knowing she was increasingly unwell. I thought it was masterfully written and I enjoyed trying to piece together what was real and what was not. I'm left with more questions than answers š

I am simultaneously confused, disturbed, and enthralled. The immersive prose that is so reflective of Samantha's mental state is kind of genius. Its giving all the disturbing dark academia vibes I was expecting.

I fear this book has me in a chokehold and no other vampire romance will ever hold a candle š«£ the 4 of them together are š„µš¶š„ I don't want it to end. Also the narration is top notch, highly recommend the audiobook!
