How is it that the writing in Nao’s chapters is beautiful and poetic and makes me want to know everything about her and Jiko, but Ruth’s chapters are almost mechanical and so tough to get through?

Beautiful prose but I just could not enjoy it. It was a bit too flowery for me. However, the immigrant struggles, a complicated relationship with a parent, and addiction issues were so beautifully and delicately portrayed. The characters in this book are wonderful and stay with you for a long time. I only wish I enjoyed this as a book a bit more.
