The characterisation and emotions in the book are expressed so incredibly through the letters and telegraphs. I fell in love with the characters and their found family in Guernsey.

I loved the vibes of this book - gothic, medieval, mystical, dark. And the writing was stunning!
If you go into it expecting a Macbeth retelling, I think you'll be disappointed. But if you don't care about the Macbeth links and you view it as just a medieval, fantasy set in Scotland - it's perfectly enjoyable 😂
The character Lady Macbeth is nothing like Shakespeare's version - this Lady Macbeth is 17, she's naive and yet has learnt manipulation from a young age. Everything she does is for her own protection, to save herself from the horrors she has seen to the other women of her father's court. While she is not the powerhouse of Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, she cannot be mistaken as weak.
