I’m a bit disappointed that I didn’t enjoy this even a little (but perhaps this version wasn’t the best version of the story), but then again, I don’t really think this is my genre. It’s just this hardboiled mystery is so famous, I was hoping for something more.

Overall an enjoyable read, with great world building and an 40 year old MC, who sometimes acted as if he fell out of a gothic horror in how he thought and acted. I can kind of see how this story got its cozy fantasy designation, but I think it’s much more about self discovery of a very inward focused character. There were many heavy topics touched on here than I expected to, which added richness to it, even if our MC wasn’t so inclined to focus on it. I like how you could even sympathize a bit with the villain, and the last conversation between the main and the villain left me conflicted. By both the contents and context from outside the book. That is something that dragged the novel down a bit for me, was the weirdly misogynistic tones in it at times, even if the society wasn’t misogynistic itself? Idk it was weird and I felt the author could have handled this better or clarified this more.
