I think it’s safe to say that we are living in a dystopian world in the US. And I think that reading is a big part of resistance to that dystopia. The more a society reads, the more connections that are made and ideas formed. I am not surprised that literacy rates keep falling. Nor am I surprised that short reels gain more attention than short novellas. I worry for myself, my friends and my family.
This isn’t a question for the group. Just a statement that’s worth discussing. Reading is political.

Hi bookworms! I’m in need of a new ereader but don’t want to support Amazon anymore. Do any other devices support reading arcs from netgalley? Not a huge fan of the netgalley reader app, so really hoping there is a way to send the file to other device types like you can with kindles.

Yesterday, I heard the best critique of white feminism, boiled down to two sentences: “They don’t want equality. They want the power to oppress.”
Any recommendations for fiction books with a similar message? Fantasy would be cool, but anything will do as long as it’s fiction! I’ve read enough non-fiction on white feminism to last a lifetime.
(Babel and Yellowface are clear examples but I’ve read them both.)

Hey everyone! I've tried to listen to podcasts, but I never get anywhere - I just can't keep my attention on it for long enough (even when it's to do with topics I love). I've never tried audiobooks as I feel I would probably have the same problem as the podcasts. Does anyone else have the same issue? Or is it completely different with an audiobook to a podcast?

Really struggling with how bland and boring the voice is in this one. It has all the excitement of an engineering textbook.

The past few years, I have fallen into the absolute goldmine that is crowdfunding indie books and special editions, and it's been so much fun to discover so many niche reads and support queer authors! I just read Infernal Relations by Tab Kimpton (A trans m/cis m, angel/demon office romance comic!! It's unfortunately not on Goodreads yet, though, so I couldn't track it here) and it was such a fun treat. I've found some great books through things like Kickstarter and other crowdfunded campaigns.
Which leads me to my question:
What are some of your favorite books you've discovered this way?
An all time favorite of mine is Knives in Your Eyes by Friction Press!!

I am searching for some high-fantasy books (complex and interesting Magic systems, basically) who aren't the typical that you see on Instagram all the time. Leave your recs please!

one of the things i love most about this app is its being anti-AI. most of the users seem to be as well and considering how hard it is to find artistic communities free of AI now, it’s very refreshing. (side note: i am truly grateful to the founders for this delightfully cosy space they’ve made). so, i think (more accurately; hope) we can agree AI-written books are an offence to the writing and reading community and not real art. however…they still exist. despite my best efforts to avoid them i’ve come across a few now—such as the truthspoken heir—and i really would rather not. which brings me to why i’m writing this; i would like to avoid AI books as much as possible. so if you know of any, please give me the titles to i can know to run away if i come across them. (i also might make a list of them if people are interested.) and one more thing! this is something i would post in requests if i wasn’t broke and had pb royalty BUT what if there was a way to tag books as AI? like, if people could “report them” and staff could confirm and leave a mark on the book’s overview? alright! i’m done, sorry 😭 thanks for reading my rant, have a good day <3

So I have an old (couple years) kindle and I don’t tend to get ebooks with Libby because I don’t like reading on my phone and I always struggle to transfer the ebook from my phone kindle library to actually on my kindle. I’ve seen posts about Kobos (haven’t looked into them yet I wanted to ask around here first) but for my Kobo readers are they Libby compatible? And if so how easy is it to get the books onto the Kobo?

Hey, how do y'all feel about footnotes in books?
Personally, I really don't like them. If I see a book has footnotes, I put it back in the shelf like it burned my hands 😅 I feel like it breaks the flow of the reading every time I have to pause to go find the appropriate footnote. It pulls me out of the story and I read slower because of it.
In fact, footnotes are the sole reason I haven't read Babel yet 🫣
But, I am curious to see the other perspective. If you do like footnotes, why? Let me know your thinking 👀

I need some short book recommendations. Any genre. Bonus points if its diverse or written by a POC ^^
