My English department decided on this book for the next school year, but one of my coworkers wants to change it because she is simply unable to teach it because of its writing style, which is apparently lacking in sophistication. I mean, it’s not just me and my other colleagues who disagree. The National Book Award committee and 40,000 citations in JSTOR also say different.

literally slices of life
j'ai initialement pris ce livre pour sa couverture et il vient finalement s'ajouter à ma pile de livres préférés (j'ai un faible pour les moments de vie et j'ai un faible pour les gens trying to figure out where they stand and experiencing adulthood and navigating relationships)

almost too perfect timing for this book. it so tactfully captures the fear of isolation, the shrinking world brought on by nascent adulthood, the perpetual anxiety of the intensely individualistic lives we are conditioned to fulfill. a nagging loneliness just jumps off the pages. happy to get me some words to pin these feelings down, i was highlighting passages in this like a man possessed.

I really enjoyed this. I listened to it as an audiobook and I think I would have enjoyed reading it even more. I’m sorry to say the audiobook reader didn’t do much for me, and I am sensitive to how ppl read things, but still I really liked this story. My experience of this is that it’s a story of people who feel like they come from a wealth of community who are isolated for a large portion of their life from that community and are still trying to make it a good life.

Interesting indeed. Why did I feel so much melancholy during this? I feel like I felt their lives slip by their fingers at an even faster rate than normal.

How can a book with so much leisure awaken such a sense of crisis? I found myself thinking about the book all the time. The author observed and articulated feelings that are just there but have never been given form.
I did not find it comforting at all. It made me confront the sly seriousness of mundane moments in life. Of wanting to build a singular life, of wanting to find community; of the awkwardness of boundaries of friendships and the anticipation of change in life. It's scary.
For the first time, I feel like I read a book that invokes the feeling of watching a film.

Man, Ravi just running away because it feels like his friends are moving on in life, when really Manu and Aysa felt comfortable settling down because they had community like Ravi!! Ravi why are you so fleeting and insecure? they adore you! Apparently EVERYONE adores you lol

I‘ve been loving this one. It feels fragmented and I still wonder how it will „come together“, but maybe the way the protagonist observes the world in bits and pieces is more authentic than a neat story. I know I can relate…

Even though their take on therapy would not be popular with modern western audiences, I like it :D not that I’d ever say that to anyone! also does this clue us in that they’re living in some western american or european city hmm?!

This is a lovely book about the quotidian. The characters are expats living in a vaguely Parisian city, spending their times rotting at cafes and at parties and on phone calls to families in distant countries and in bed speaking their secret language to each other. They search for an apartment, imagine their future selves, experience some minor drama with friends, and somehow find themselves in a new stage of their lives.
