I'm not going to lie, I desperately want to finish this, but it's dragging at this point.

Is it just me, or do you avoid books set in your city?
I was born and raised by Seattle. I don't know why it is, but books set in Washington or Seattle I avoid.
Is there any reason why??? Not really. (Side tangent TV shows or movies set in the state kind of bug me though because it REALLY shows they've never been there EVER Cough Cough Death Note live action (accept Supernatural and X files))
I read Remarkably Bright Creatures recently and it was set in Washington and I enjoyed how the author wrote the city as it's own character. But that was the only book I have read set in my city.
How about you? Or do you enjoy books more if they are setbin your city? Just curiosity plaguing me again.

When you pick up a new book, how many chapters do you read before considering it for a DNF?
For example, I like to sample the prologues or first few chapters of tons of books which I'd TBRed, and if I didn't click with them, I don't move forward with the books. But I do not officially put them in the DNF shelf.
So what is your criteria of picking up brand new books and requirements to consider them DNFed?

So, Rin, between Nezha and Altan, which one will you choose? 🤭

This was very hard for me to finish and I didn't even like it 🫠 The things I do for a pretty badge... I was excited because the plot was actually very promising: magic, jam and books! Some of my favorite elements. But unfortunately, this wasn't it.
🍃 Larren had the personality of a cardboard, and I felt like their lovestory was very forced since the beginning. It was ridiculous how many times Kiela tells us that she's ✨️ blue ✨️ but we aren't told anything about his physical appearance. We were told how much they were getting close, but I didn't actually see it. They were childhood friends but one has amnesia and the other one just says that she was "kind to him", like this can justify an infatuation, after more than a decade? Their kiss came out of nowhere and they had no chemistry AT ALL. It was almost like they didn't fall in love with each other because of who they are, but just because it was convenient. He is the nice neighbor, and she's the new girl. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. And of course they will marry at the end because they weren't rushing enough already. Also, I didn't like the villagers just trauma dumping Larren's past on her over tea ☠️ Why would you do that? And then this topic is NEVER brought up again. We just have to accept it.
🔥 I felt like the Radane plot was so unnecessary and rushed. First she was a sweetheart, then she turns into this nosy menace because of her personal goals, and the next day she was trusting them with all her secrets and falling in love with someone she just met?
🚺 At the beginning it's made very clear that Kiela is kind of a privileged snob, and because of this I thought that the politics aspect would have been more explored in the story. Even if Kiela does indeed grow during the story, I didn't feel like at the end she really understood why the rebels burnt the library in the first place.
Also, she's obsessed with people finding out about her magic but then she proceeds to do the most public magic show she can think of. Make it make sense 😅

‘At that moment the power of reading made itself clear and real to me. If I could see the words, then no one could control the, or what i got from them’
‘It was a completely private affair and completely free and, therefore, completely subversive.’
The power of knowledge, ability to read and as a result awareness. I don’t think it has hit me what a privilege it is to be able to pick up a book whenever I want as an afterthought. There is a world out there (past and present) where people are not able or even allowed to consume any kind of reading. It’s also very fitting with all the discourse on whether reading is political or not, I mean the quote speaks for itself.
