Bree girl, I will give you a whole dollar not to fall in love with any man in this book. Don't you do it! They ain't worth it! Don't give me any of that Blood of Hercules shit! You're better than that!

i'm starting to hit some roadblocks that i was hoping to avoid. at first it seemed like a nice yet tense book, with a rich world and well-written characters, but this is just too much. there's way too much happening all at once. it's bad circumstance after bad circumstance, after bad circumstance. there's never a time to catch a break, to pause, to relax a little, to spend some time with the characters without having every single nerve on edge. it's a little exhausting to turn the page and wonder "what horrible caveat will we have to bear this time?". it would be nice if we could pause a little and have some fun, but it seems like every single conversation and every single scene needs to be full of tension and danger. it's making me feel hopeless but in a counterintuitive way; it's like the characters developing and the plot advancing is impractical. i can respect the messaging and the well structured plot, but i cant appreciate that tracy deonn fills the book with so much tension at every interval. either she doesnt trust that her main conflict is interesting so she keeps adding little sub-conflicts, or this is purposeful but very exhausting.
