I really wanted to like it but it just fell kinda flat for me. ik it’s a novella so it doesn’t have the room for as much character development but it still lacked something I can’t quite name. it has its moments but overall not my fav by any means.

Opening lines can be fairly easy to do well, but to maintain that hook? Tricky. So what is the best/your favourite opening chapter or prologue you have read? Did you end up loving the book, or did it go downhill?
I've read some good'uns, but the first chapter of Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang is something else. It devastates you with lore and action in equal measure. You then continue with a different character, just left wondering 'what happened?' It sets up the stakes, the tension, and the brutality masterfully in my opinion.
So which openers do you remember vividly? Left you hungry to read more? Told you early on you might be reading a new favourite book? Or lied to you that you might be reading a new favourite. 😂
