Forced into unending sleep or perilous insomnia, repeating tedious daily routines until your body rots, watching as your skin starts to glow or your hands sprout scales—these novels feature illnesses that are far from typical.

Good Morning 🌞
are you trying to squeeze in one last book today or finishing the last one? If so which one is it? I hope I can finish Imogen, obviously which will earn me the gold badge in the Sapphic across genres quest. 🥰

Slaughterhouse-Five is a book that, to me, defies description. Part war story, part sci-fi, and yet somehow neither of those things and both of them at the same time. The book follows Billy Pilgrim through his life but mainly focuses on his experiences as a prisoner of war in Dresden. Some time after the war, he meets aliens, the Tralfamadorians, and tries to share about his encounter with others. The story was told in a non-linear narrative, but I found it quite readable and easy to follow. I also felt that it suited how the Tralfamadorians view time—as everything is currently happening, has always happened, and will always happen. The book was quite bleak, depicting war (particularly World War II) as a “Children’s Crusade” and not glorifying any part of it. It also seems to make the point throughout that humans, including and perhaps especially Billy, do not have free will in the way we often think we do. This was definitely a thinker, but I can understand why it is a classic.

Have you found your first 5-star read of 2026? If so, what was it? How many have you had?
I am really picky with giving out five stars. I am hoping to come across one real soon. In the meantime, I am interested to see what books have met the mark for you!!
