I want to preface this by saying: I am the target audience for this book! I have a morbid fascination with religious fundamentalists, cults and conservatives. I saw the blurb and was immediately hooked. Then I found out, that the author also is one of the hosts of a cultural/political podcast (Diabolical Lies) that I had been listening to regularly.

This book did some things incredibly well. I loved the character writing. The balancing act of making the main character an unreliable narrator, making her hypocritical and mean-spirited, highlighting the cognitive dissonance between her thoughts and actions AND STILL making me empathize with her on so many levels.. That was so fun to explore!

The book feels like a satirical nod to tradwives and conservatives (especially in the US). But it's not really satire anymore, because somehow this has become our reality, right? In Germany we say "Es trifft den Zeitgeist." ("It captures the spirit of the times.")

I did have some issues with the pacing. The story progressed slowly until the last 20% and one of the timelines really dragged for me. I also wasn't 100% satisfied with the ending - maybe 90%. The direction it took fit the story, so ultimately I was okay with it.

tl;dr: Not perfect, but nearly perfect for me.

This book feels like it belongs in the mid 2000s, it felt sooooo dated. I am going to be harsh: the MC is a quirky/corny, (not even endearingly) awkward, middle aged guy in a midlife crisis, who finds his manic pixie dream girl and an unexpected friend. There is some character growth in the last third, but when I finally got there, I barely cared. There are humor and even some touching moments in the story and it wasn't offensively bad - it just was not for me.
