I loved this ending to the Defy the Night trilogy! I wasn't sure how I felt about all the MCs being separated, but we definitely see growth from all of them that would not have happened if they were still together. The story was engaging (as seems to be the case with this author), and the ending was satisfying, but not what I would have expected. I can safely report that this is an HEA (Happily Ever After) ending, so do not fear that your favorite characters will be killed off!

There was an odd sci-fi / fantasy element to this one (the two MCs have powers) that I wouldn't have expected from Susanna Kearsley. It stuck out in not a great way, though and I didn't really like spending time with the MCs. The woman they were following though was very interesting, and those were the parts of the book I looked forward to. I found it hard to read at times, since I felt like the book dragged when we were in the present day, but the parts in the past were really interesting, which increased my overall rating. The writing was good and moved the story along with just enough description to provide a sense of time and place, but the characters were not what I would have epxected.

I didn't realize this was middle grade when I started reading it. The plot was really good, and I'm really glad that there are books like this with strong and complex characters and for those who read at this level. The audio book was really well done, but it got old for me, especially in the middle and end, and I had to push myself to keep going. This is perfect for anyone who loves middle grade, but it just was not for me.

I wasn't sure if I would like this book, but I ended up loving it. All of the world building happens at the beginning, so the book does take time to get started. But I didn't realize what RG was doing until I things really got moving and I realized that I could understand the world and experience it the way Elspeth did. I also liked the power imbalance that the magic system introduced, it creates an interesting dynamic between the haves and have nots. The plot was tight, the characters were 3D, and I look forward to seeing where this journey ends in book 2.
